WHS will be implementing a "no bag/purse" policy for the upcoming Winter sports season. These items along with food and drinks are not allowed in the gym. However, the following are permitted: 1) small wallets/clutches, 2) clear bags, 3) medical bags, and 4) diaper bags. All spectators will pass through metal detectors, and their bags will be subject to search. Tobacco products and paraphernalia are not allowed on school premises. If you leave the school, you will need to purchase another ticket to return.
In recent years, tragic events on school campuses have heightened concerns about the safety and security of students and employees. During our grand opening, many visitors questioned the absence of metal detectors in our new school. To address these concerns, metal detectors were recently acquired. In fact, all of the schools throughout the division will have this capability.
At Westmoreland High School, we have 3 metal detectors, which will expedite students entering the building. Prior to passing through the metal detecting machine, students will empty their pockets into plastic containers. These items will be placed on a table to the side of the machine. On a daily basis, we will spot check backpacks and duffle bags at random. If contraband items are discovered, parents will be contacted, and students will face consequences.
Hopefully, everyone will adjust to the new process and feel safer as a result. Know that we greatly appreciate your cooperation and support.
